It is with deep sorrow that the family of Joan L. Moffatt announces her passing in March, 2026.
Mom was born to Wallace and Bernice Anderson in 1934 in Seattle, Washington. She attended Lincoln High School in Seattle where she and Robert (Bob) Moffatt met, fell in love and married in 1951. Dad and Mom welcomed the first of their six children (in birth order: Mike, Nanci, Ron, Joan, Matt and Jan) into their lives starting in 1952.
Mom was a stay-at-home homemaker. Managing six children had it times, yet she was an amazing, wonderful, involved and loving Mother. She made ‘special times’ for all of us, so we all had the pleasure of having Mom to ourselves! She was employed for several years at Sears for evening part-time work around the holiday. Mom was active in the Kennydale Elementary PTA. She was honored with the Golden Apple award the last year she was a member of the PTA. Every summer we went on a family trip. Though Mom was still busy with the usual ‘Mom stuff’ during some of the vacation time she always had a smile on her face and joined in on the activities. Mom was full of energy, ideas and aspirations! She expanded her interests into community service by joining the City of Renton’s Park and Recreation Board. She and the entire board were responsible for the creation of the Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park in Renton as well as other City of Renton parks. After retiring from the City of Renton’s Park and Recreation Board she worked part-time in setting up and managing marketing displays in the local stores in the Renton area. In addition to travelling with Dad on many business trips, they took recreational trips around the United States (and two Alaskan cruises), Canada, Scotland and Britain.
Dad was born in 1932 to Ronald and Evelyn Moffatt. His sister, Patricia, was born two years later. Dad also attended Lincoln High School in Seattle. After Mom and Dad were married, he served in the Navy. Soon he began a 42-year career at Boeing. Dad rose through the ranks at Boeing and as his career soared, so did he. He traveled extensively for Boeing in the United States and around the world, developing business relationships and friendships that endured long after his retirement. He was a smart, energetic and savvy businessman who learned and grew every moment in his life. Yet he managed to be a wonderful, supportive and loving husband and father along the way. Once we were grown and on our own, Mom would sometimes accompany him in his travels. One of Dad’s proudest career accomplishments was planning and leading Boeing’s military and space presence at the Paris Air Show and the Farnborough Air Show. He retired in 1994 as the Boeing Director of Customer Relations for the Defense Division.
Mom and Dad were members of the Fairwood Golf and Country Club in Renton for many years. Dad proudly served as Club President in 1978. Mom also enjoyed having lunch then playing cards with her friends at Fairwood when not golfing. They decided they needed sunnier, warmer weather which led to a wintertime life in the San Diego area (Fallbrook) to a explore and enjoy new surroundings and of course, the golfing! They would return before Easter and would spend time with family and friends in the greater Seattle area and beyond. They enjoyed entertaining and hosted all the birthday and holiday gatherings in the family home until our extended family grew to include spouses, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mom’s greatest legacy was that of a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and friend!
Passing prior to Mom was the love of her life, Bob; her first grandchild, Jennifer (Nanci); and her sister, Marcia Jones. Left behind to mourn her passing are her six children: Mike, Nanci (Jeff), Ron (Teresa), Joan (Michael), Matt, and Jan (Steve); Her surviving 10 grandchildren (Mike) Sarah, (Nanci) Mary, (Ron) April and Adam, (Joan) William, (Matt) Matt and Jim, (Jan) Zackary, Dustin and Ariel; And her 15 great-grandchildren.
A family and public memorial service will be on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 2pm at Greenwood Memorial Park and Funeral Home located at 350 Monroe Ave. NE, Renton, WA, 98056.
