John was born on February 6, 1966 in West Islip, New York. He is survived by his Mother, Alice Fitzgerald and five siblings: Eileen Fitzgerald, Brian Fitzgerald, Nora MacKenzie, Kevin Fitzgerald and Karen Fitzgerald.
In 1967, John and his family moved to Burien, Washington. The family resided in Burien until 1968 when they moved to Renton, Washington.
In 1972, John moved back to Lake Ronkonkoma, New York with his family. While in New York, John attended Gatelot Elementary school.
In 1976, John and his family moved back to Renton, Washington. Once back in Renton, John attended Benson Hill Elementary for fifth and sixth grade. After elementary school, John attended Nelson Middle School and then Lindbergh High School. While at Lindbergh, John lettered in swimming. During his senior year, John left Lindbergh and went to Renton Alternative High School to finish up his high school diploma.
After high school, John joined the Navy. He graduated Navy boot camp in the summer of 1984 in San Diego, California. During his time in the Navy, John became a skilled welder. In 1987, while on the U.S.S. Acadia, John received a Letter of Appreciation for his exemplary work repairing the U.S.S. Stark, which was bombed in the Persian Gulf. John received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1988.
After the Navy, John worked as a welder in the shipyards for several years and resided in various locations: Renton, Vancouver, Las Vegas and finally Seattle. In the late 1990’s John suffered from a severe neck injury while working as a welder and remained on disability until his passing.
In 1992, John was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In his final four years of his life, John made dramatic progress overcoming the challenges that bipolar disorder created for him. John stabilized his mental health and healed family relationships. The family is eternally grateful for the healing and forgiveness God granted John and the family.
John was a loving and fun son, brother and uncle. He will be greatly missed by his mother, three sisters, two brothers, nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.
