Sum Gay was born in Guangxi Peng Lok China. He was the 2nd oldest out of the 6 siblings in the family. In order to support the family, he did not attend school past elementary. In his early 20s, he met Won who worked at the same warehouse that exports fine porcelains and ceramics. They were married in December 1969. They had two children, Kyle (Wai Ming) and Wai Yin. Sum Gay always shared stories about how he carried his entire family around on the bicycle when they were little. Sum Gay had a seat mounted on the handle bar for Kyle, he would pedal while Won sat behind on the back holding Wai. No one fell or got hurt—at least Kyle and Wai can’t remember.
They immigrated to the USA with the help of his older sister, Ho May Wah. While waiting for immigration in 1979, they lived and rented a small room from the wonderful Law family who had 3 kids of their own in Hong Kong. Imagine a 2 bedroom small apartment with 9 people living in it. They took us in as their own family and became close friends. The kids would call the adults godfather and godmother. During their one year there, Sum Gay worked in a factory that built oscillating house fans.
In 1980, the Ho family began a new life in Seattle. Sum Gay started working as a cook at Art Lee’s and later at Wah Kue Café, both Chinese restaurants. He retired in 2010. During retirement he liked to cook a variety of dishes and loved to watch the shows about Guangzhou and food stalls/restaurants on YouTube. He would make the Ho family’s secret chili black bean sauce. Kyle and Wai have the recipe and detailed instructions but probably won’t be able to make it just like dad. Sum Gay used WeChat to keep in touch with his old friends from China along with those in the US to reminisce about the good old days and catch up with how they are doing.
Sum Gay was always very frugal and worked very hard. He was laid back and easy going. He was a social bird and really liked talking to everyone. He loved to tinker around to fix and build things. He would mend a broken chair leg and made a little shelf for the telephone. He loved kids and often times played with them like he’s a kid himself. He loved his family and was very proud of how his children were raised and was able to see one of his four grandsons graduate from high school this past year.
In the end, he never wanted to bother any friends or burden his kids even though he was in great pain. He would just say he was doing okay and tell you thank you.
Sum Gay is survived by: wife Won Hai Fung Ho; son Kyle Ming Ho; daughter-in-law Lisa Yamamoto; daughter Wai Yin Ho; son-in-law Brian Le; grandsons (Kyle and Lisa) Taiken Ho and Jaden Ho; grandsons (Wai and Brian) Lucas Le and Carson Le. He is preceded by his father Ho Jok Chup, mother Mill Yee Luke, and younger brother Kwong Sang Ho.
He will be forever loved and missed.
