Born February 25, 1919 to Charles Howard Tickner and Eva Griffith Tickner in Baltimore, Maryland. Attended Boys Latin School and graduated high school from Baltimore City College in December 1936. He began working in the family funeral business, William J. Tickner and Sons, making him the fourth generation of family in this endeavor. World War II and the first peacetime draft interrupted his career; Bud enlisted in the U.S. Navy reserves in October of 1940 for “the duration of the conflict.” During his time in the Navy he rose from Apprentice Seaman to Chief Quartermaster, took part in three major assault landings in Sicily, Salerno and Normandy; he served in Panama, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Salerno, the British Isles and France, receiving his honorable discharge on September 25, 1945. He returned to Baltimore to resume his career at the funeral home. He married Katherine Rebecca Moran in June of 1946, his wife of 56 years. After his father’s death in 1954, Bud took the reins of the funeral establishment until he decided to sell in 1967. The family moved to Buffalo, New York for four years and on to Dallas, Texas where they settled. After forays into the management search field and tax accounting, he returned to the funeral business in Maryland to conclude his professional life. Katherine and Bud retired in Dallas, Texas in 1982. Preceded in death by Charles Howard Tickner, Sr., Eva L. Griffith, and Katherine M. Tickner. Survived by sons James Richard (Montello, Wisconsin), David William (Lewisville, Texas) and Stephen Robert (Plano, Texas.) Grandchildren Melissa Reske (Paul), Anne Porter (Adam), Kate Tickner (Stephen Dunfee), Patrick Tickner, Kristine Tickner, Erin Earhardt (Kevin), six great grand children, nephews, a niece and a plethora of friends. Bud’s stories may be laid to rest with him, however they will ring in our minds for eternity as will his one-liners, quips and nick-names. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. and reception at Christ United Methodist Church at Coit Rd. and Parker Rd. in Plano, Texas. Private interment will follow at Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
Arrangements under the direction of Sparkman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Richardson, TX.
