John Harold Cannon, age 70, reached the end of “The Long Goodbye” on March 25, 2013. John is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kay, his sister Susan, his niece Colleen, and his first cousins, Jennie, Evelyn, Paul Joseph, and Ed, along with their families.
John leaves a legacy of adventure and fascination for “the world below” as one who was instrumental in promoting S.C.U.B.A. diving as a sport. He started free diving in 1953 in Fort Walton and Destin, Florida. Starting professionally in the mid/late 1960’s, John’s passion for the undersea world included work as a dive shop sales manager, master instructor, charter dive trip coordinator, master equipment repairman, S.C.U.B.A. instructor for Dallas County Community College District and YMCA, co-owner (along with Captain Alden E. Blood) of charter dive and fishing vessels The Silver King and Silver King II, and underwater photography. John was certified in NAUI, YMCA, PADI, SCIP, and NASDS dive programs and served on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Council Instructors Program. He was also the associate editor of the SCIP training manual.
Several of John’s underwater photographs have hung in local dive shops, and some have won international competition. One of John’s fellow award-winning photographer friends, Fred Bavendam, invited him to Crystal River, Florida on an assignment to cover a photo story on manatees. Along with his manatee model companion, John wound up on the cover of the September, 1984 issue of National Geographic Magazine.
Since 1973, Cannon Underwater Enterprises has served to train divers from new initiates to the advancement of instructors, train divers in and promote underwater photography, and repair and redesign air regulators.
