To the Carson family and friends - our sincerest sympathy and prayers are with you all. My husband, Keith and I were young graduate engineers working for Richard at Brockette Davis Drake from 1985-1987. We were blessed to have worked with Richard. He was a smart engineer, very willing to assist and mentor, a genuinely fun person to be around and he was always kind and caring. I will never forget his smile and laugh!  We live in Florida and we’re traveling for our anniversary this week.  I wish we could have attended the service and let you all know in person how we appreciated getting to know Richard. I met Richard when I transfered to Public Works in 1975. We actually became very good friends after I left the City and we began teaming up on Projects.
We worked together very close specially in the last six years. 
We met often to discuss our projects during lunch and share thoughts about our families.
Richard will be missed.

I met Richard the very first year of my professional career in Dallas back in 1986.  We had been following each other to several engineering firms since then.  He had been my mentor, colleague, boss, supervisor, and friend.  I always felt that he was a big brother to me and not only an engineer but also a person I could look up to.  He loved his wife and her dedication to her father.  He was proud of his children and showed us his grandchildren's photos and videos whenever he had a chance.  He and I were planning last Tuesday that we would work together until one of us retires.  The day came too soon than we could imagine.  I will miss him very much.   

I was introduced to Richard in 1974 when I returned to work for the City of Dallas from military service. He was in full swing as a design engineer in the Drainage Division where I was assigned as a draftsman. Richard became a great mentor in teaching me the design aspect of projects, and I always admired how passionate he was about his work.

Outside of the office, Richard was just as ambitious about anything that interested him. (Patricia, do you remember the Hot Springs trip where Richard bet (and lost) every penny on Red Hot Tamale in the 3rd race and our cross country trip to Las Vegas?) We really had some great times together, which I will always treasure. I feel lucky to have known Richard and will miss him dearly. 

I met Richard the day he came to work for the City of Dallas after he graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso.  He was as green as he could be.  A young graduate that thought he was going to set the engineering world on fire.  It only took him a short time to learn that there was a lot to learn in the real world. His first assignment was in the Public Works Department, Paving and Drainage Section. I was a drafter in that same section. Rick was very willing to take on any task he was given. I was just lucky enough to be assigned to work with him. He was as good an EIT (Engineer In Trainer) as I’ve ever had the privilege working with. No matter what the challenge, he took it on and never looked back. He was one of the “new crop” of engineers. He quickly moved up to Engineer then to Senior Engineer. He always gave it his all. 
Rick and I were not only were co workers, we became good friends. It didn’t take long to know he was into sports. All kind of sports. We were on the Pubic Works softball and basketball teams. We were also on a bowling team at the newly open Don Carter Bowling Center. We also enjoyed several trips to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to the horse races.  He always told great stories of the dog races he would go to in El Paso. We also lived in the same area in north Dallas.  I was very honored to have been asked to be in his and Patricia’s wedding. We all celebrated together the arrival of our children. 
It was a sad day for me when he made the decision to leave the City of Dallas. He knew it was time for him to spread his wings into the real world of engineering. And boy did he. For a time he had his own engineering firm. Then he worked for one of the best firms in Dallas. 
When my wife gave me a 50th surprise birthday party, Rick and Patricia were there. That was about 20 years ago. I always think about him and all the very good time we had. I will miss him very much. 


I met Richard during my high school days and he had a profound influence on my life.  He was a kind and loving man who spoke lovingly of his wife and her dedication to her father.  He adored his children and grandchildren.  He was proud of the restoration of the car that he did with his son.

Richard was a part of my family's life for several years.  He will be a part of the best memories of my life.  Rest in peace, Richard.  I will miss you!
