Rick was born in St. Petersburg Florida, on October 11th, 1957 and the family soon moved to Dallas. After high school, he spent four years doing construction work across the US and internationally throughout Europe, the Middle East, Canada, and Mexico. He was accepted into the Art Institute of Dallas where he concentrated on oil painting. After finishing at the Art Institute, Rick joined the Dallas Fire Department in 1981 where he spent the next 13 years as a firefighter, paramedic, and member of the football, power-lifting, and rodeo teams. In 1994, Rick retired from the FD to pursue art as his full-time career. Though his work focused mainly on firefighters, equine art, and portraits, he also painted many wall murals for local bars and restaurants such as Matt's Rancho Martinez and large commission pieces for a select clientele of private collectors. His work was picked up by art galleries in Dallas, Denver, Santa Fe, and many others in the southwest. He was chosen to do commemorative paintings for both the Texas and New York Firefighters Associations and was picked by unanimous consent to be the Official Artist of the nationally recognized Menlo Charity Horse Show in 2016. Of all his work Rick was most proud of the portraits he painted of Dallas Firefighters who died in the line of duty. These "Line of Duty Death" portraits hang in the Dallas Fire Academy in honor of the fallen. His oil portraits and oil paintings are collected by people from every walk of life, including celebrities, media personalities, business executives, civic leaders, and professional athletes.
Services for Rick will be Sunday, April 24 at 11:00 AM, Sparkman Funeral Home, 1029 S. Greenville Ave., Richardson, 75081. A celebration of life will follow from 1-3 PM at the Dallas Firefighters Association Hall 10956 Audelia Rd. Dallas, 75243.
