Robert’s life was defined by laughter, love, and a smile so warm and infectious that it brightened every room he entered. He met his beloved Cathy at a Catholic Youth Organization dance in 1969 and from the moment he laid eyes on her, he knew she was the one. Turning to his friend, he declared, “I’m going to marry that girl.” True to his words, Robert and Cathy were married on June 12, 1976, beginning a love story that spanned nearly five decades and inspired everyone who knew them.
Together, Rob and Cathy built a beautiful life centered on family. Their three daughters were the pride and joy of Robert’s life. A devoted father, he never missed a basketball game, a dance recital, or any moment, big or small, that mattered to his girls. He coached their teams, cheered the loudest, and filled their lives with laughter and more than a few classic dad jokes. He was endlessly proud of Amie, Lorie, and Carie and all that they accomplished.
Robert’s love of basketball ran deep. He played competitively well into his forties and shared that passion by coaching and becoming one of the original season ticket holders of the Dallas Mavericks. He made countless memories at Mavericks games, bringing friends and family along to experience the excitement and camaraderie he treasured.
Professionally, Robert was a master craftsman and the premier tailor in Dallas, Texas. Through his shop, Cantu Tailors, he built a stellar reputation and loyal clientele from across the state. Known for his impeccable skill and warm personal touch, Robert ensured every customer left looking their best and feeling like family.
Becoming a grandfather was one of Robert’s greatest joys. “Pops,” as he was lovingly called by Harrison and Harper, adored every moment spent watching them grow and thrive. He was thrilled to learn that his youngest daughter Carie was expecting a son, excited to finally share his world of boys in a family full of girls.
Robert, known affectionately as Robbie, Rob, Dad, Daddie-o, and Pops, will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. His legacy of unconditional love, laughter, and kindness lives on in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched. Though he leaves a space that cannot be filled, his presence will be felt in every shared story, every burst of laughter, and every loving memory.
Robert is preceded and in death by his brother Roy Cantu and wife Cathy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Cantu; his daughters Amie Hinderliter and husband Don Hinderliter, along with their children Harrison and Harper; Lorie Libby; and Carie Vize and husband Jeremy Vize, who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby boy.
