Eugene Patrick Sheehy

Eugene Patrick Sheehy Jan. 4, 1925-July 4, 2011 Gene Sheehy, of San Rafael, CA, passed away on July 4 from complications suffered as the result of a fall that occurred while he was working in his garden. He was 86 years old. Gene was born in San Francisco to Daniel James Sheehy and Margaret Catherine Whalen, and is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helenanne. He attended St. Monica's School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory. He joined the United States Navy and served in World War II, mainly in the South Pacific. He returned to San Francisco and attended the University of San Francisco, graduating with a degree in Physics. Gene worked for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company for 37 years before retiring in 1986. He met his wife, Elizabeth (Betty), at Old Saint Mary's in San Francisco. They were married in Norfolk, Nebraska in 1955 and resided in Greenbrae, CA, for a short time before moving to San Rafael, CA. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Sheehy; four children, Mary Ellen Hughes (Mitch) Phoenix, AZ; Daniel Sheehy (Jill) Rohnert Park; Kathryn Hansen (Chris) McKinleyville; Patrick Sheehy (Linda) Fairfax; and five grandchildren, Grady, Griffin, Hayley, Sarah, and Cori. Gene was steadfast in his love for his family and was happiest at gatherings with family and friends. Gardening, travel, and reading took up most of his time later in life. His quiet strength and impish sense of humor will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Vincent's School for Boys or St. Vincent de Paul of San Rafael. A rosary will be held Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 PM at Keaton's Mortuary, 1022 E Street, San Rafael, and a Memorial Mass will be held Friday, July 15 at 11 AM at St. Isabella's Catholic Church, 1 Trinity Way, San Rafael.
