Michael Finley McCormac passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22nd in the presence of his wife (Diana) and son (Joseph). A native San Franciscan and resident of Marin for nearly 50 years, Michael lived a full and rewarding life. Born to Thomas Houghton McCormac and Bernice Rothchild McCormac, “Mike” grew up on Ulloa Street in San Francisco and stayed local, attending St Brendan Parish School down the street (class of ‘51), then continuing his studies at Riordan High School before transferring to Lincoln High School (class of ‘55). Next, was USF where he was a member of the Boxing Club and Beta Phi Sigma fraternity, graduating in 1959. After college, Michael went into real estate, becoming a Broker at the young age of 21. He immediately founded his own company, UC Realty, which marked the beginning of a long and distinguished career that lasted nearly 50 years. In the 1970’s, Mike became the youngest person to be elected President and Chairman of the San Francisco Real Estate Board, a notable achievement. He went on to start Mike McCormac Realtors and later worked at Grubb & Ellis and Coldwell Banker. He also served as a member on the Board of Directors for the Special Olympics in Marin. However, despite his great achievements in real estate, there was nothing more important to Mike than his family and friends, of which he had many. He married the love of his life, Diana Sierra, in July 1975, and together they began a new family alongside his previous children Michael John and Jacqueline Noreen. In April 1980 they welcomed son Joseph Thomas and the family was complete. A renowned member of the Olympic Club, Mike was often found at the tennis or handball courts or spending time at the Club Bar socializing with everyone. In Mike’s last months, he was surrounded in love by his wife Diana, daughter Jacqueline, son Joseph, grandchildren Chloe and Ian McCormac, Johnny, Sophia, and Marcus Del Bianco, brother Gary, nephews Jeff and Greg, son-in-law John DelBianco, and many other friends and family. He was preceded in death by his eldest son Michael John and infant daughter Joni Lynn.
Funeral services will be held at St. Anselm Church at 11am on Thursday, August 4th followed by a reception at the Marin Art & Garden Center. A viewing is being held at Keaton’s Mortuary on August 3rd from 5pm-8pm for those that wish to say goodbye to Michael one last time. If you wish to donate in Michael’s honor, you can donate to the Special Olympics of Northern California or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
