Mr. Albert Jennings Turner

Albert Turner, age 85, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on September 30, 2025. He was born in Martinsville, VA on February 23, 1940. He was predeceased by his father William J. Turner, his mother Hazel R. Turner, and his sister Alice T. Dillon. Survivors include his wife and best friend Carol Turner, their daughter Gwen Smith, son-in-law Russell Smith, grandchildren Rachel, Kaitlyn and Zach Smith and his sister Rebecca Nance.

His interest from childhood in drawing and his love of art and history led him to UVA to study architecture which became his passion and his career. After graduating and working for a few years in an architectural firm in Martinsville, he joined Lee, King and Poole, a local Richmond architectural firm. He worked there until his retirement, subsequently becoming a partner in the firm that eventually changed its name to LKPW Architects.

He loved being a father and grandfather. He felt joy in spending time with all his grandchildren. Albert’s interests also included music, reading, antique cars, church activities and attending the Richmond Symphony concerts. He volunteered by walking dogs at the Richmond SPCA and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels. He sang in the choir at Trinity Lutheran Church for 27 years.

Albert was a gentle and kind man. Once, he and Carol adopted a beagle who was afraid of men. At first, she cowered and rolled over in fear and submission every time he came near her, but behaved normally with Carol. The dog quickly changed her mind about him and he became her man. With him, she felt safe and loved. Albert made everyone feel safe and loved. He will forever be missed.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday October 07, 2025 at 10 am, with a funeral service at 11 am at Woody Funeral Home Parham Road Chapel, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229. The burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the American Lung Association or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
