Carolyn lived a life defined by selflessness, generosity, kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome, and helping those around her brought her immense joy. She was also delightfully feisty and had an easy way of making people laugh.
Above all else, Carolyn treasured her family. She was a proud mother, and her greatest joy was being “Gammy.” She loved her grandchildren beyond measure and was their biggest supporter, fan, and cheerleader. She taught by example, showing her children and grandchildren how to be resilient, strong, loving, and caring.
Those who knew her will remember Carolyn’s wit, spunky demeanor, and the way she made life better simply by being part of it. She could make anyone laugh while sharing her honest opinions. When asked how she was doing, her reply was always, “I couldn’t be better!” Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she loved and in the countless ways she shaped their lives.
Born on July 13, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia, Carolyn’s life journey took her from there to Wyckoff, New Jersey, then to Glen Allen, Virginia, before she ultimately settled in Sarasota, Florida, in her later years. She is survived by her son, John Taylor Payne, Jr. (Kimberly) of Manassas, Virginia; her daughter, Mary-Beth Thompson (Jason) of Sarasota, Florida; and her beloved grandchildren: John Taylor Payne III of Tempe, Arizona; Christian Payne of Van Buren Township, Michigan; Benjamin Payne of Manassas, Virginia; and Macy and Ashby Thompson of Gainesville, Florida. She is now peacefully reunited with the love of her life, her husband, John Taylor Payne, Sr., who preceded her in death.
A service will be held on Monday, April 6, at 11:30 a.m. at Woody Funeral Home – Parham in Richmond, Virginia, followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Carolyn had a true passion for helping others. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring her memory with a donation to one of her favorite charities, Children’s Miracle Network at Shands Hospital, or to any organization dedicated to supporting children.
Though we will miss her deeply, we are forever grateful for the love she gave, the memories she created, and the example she set. Her love remains, always.
