

Charlie was a man with an impressive Military and Educational career. He was an amazing husband, and a wonderful father and grandfather, but it was his compassion, faith, and sense of humor that made him a true leader in this world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Lee and Irma Worrell Gurkin, and a brother Hubert (Bert) Lee Gurkin Jr. Charlie is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Virginia Gurkin; his children, Christina Gurkin Perry, her husband Douglas Alan Perry, and their children Nicholas Alexander Perry, and Katherine Corinne Perry; Michelle Elise Dalton, her husband Stephen Philip Dalton and their children Kaitlyn Elise Dalton and Cole Philip Dalton; Gray Chandler Gurkin, his wife Christy Ryan Gurkin, and their children Ellieblue Ryan Gurkin and Zane Robert Gurkin; and Carey Gurkin Estes and her sons, Andrew William Estes, Charles Reuben Estes, and Jacob Gray Estes. He is also survived by his sister, Irma Lee Hardee.
Charlie retired as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S Army, having served in Germany and Okinawa. He was honored to serve, and he loved his country. Charlie retired after thirty eight years in public education, having served at J.B. Cary Middle, H.M. Pearson, Enon, W.W. Gordon, and Matoaca Elementary schools. He graduated from North Carolina State University, and earned his Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. He was a member of West End Assembly of God for over 20 years, and traveled on many missions trips sharing his love for the Lord.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Monday, April 11, 2016, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. His funeral service will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, April 12th at West End Assembly of God Church, 401 N. Parham Rd Richmond. Interment will be at Westhampton Memorial and Cremation Park after the service. Immediately following all are invited to attend a reception at West End Assembly of God Church.
