Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, after a brief illness.
Viers, a native of Gundy, Va., loved to build things and fly
airplanes. He built three of his own houses, including his last home
in Montpelier where he was living at the time of his death. He flew
airplanes privately for 20 years, soaring all over the country in his
Cessna plane.
His wife, Patricia, and daughter, Terri Lee, as well as close friends
bought Viers many joys in his life.
Viers was born on March 4, 1943. Growing up in Grundy, he, and his
brothers survived many childhood escapades. Once when a chicken coop
burned down, he and his beloved twin brother, Jerry, tried to pin the
fire on each other.
Viers attended Grundy High School, graduating in 1961. There he became
lifelong friends with Keith McClanahan. The two vacationed with their
wives as their children grew up and enjoyed many, many games of Rook
together. He also shared very fond memories of many adventures with
his cousins, J.B., Bobby Jo, Doug and Clarence Viers as well as Mary Matney.
After high school, Viers attended Pikeville College where he obtained
a bachelor’s degree in business in 1965 and also picked up carpenter
skills. Those skills propelled Viers into a career of carpentry and
construction.
Viers’s 50 year business career took him to Hanover and Ashland.
Friendships blossomed in both towns. Close friends in Hanover were
Morris and Kay Rooke, Tom Frazier, Don and Judy Little and in Ashland
Doug and Ann Wertman.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed maintaining the Montpelier home
and taking his new giant lawn mower on morning jaunts. When you were
with Viers, his great sense of humor led to constant jokes. A frequent
companion was Viers’ dog, “Cuddles,” who often enjoyed treats from
Kentucky Fried Chicken. For the past nine years, his constant
companion was a rescue cat aptly named "Kitty Cat."
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Patricia
Rowlett Viers of Montpelier, and his daughter, Terri Lee Rose of Wake
Forest, N.C., and her husband, Matthew as well as many cousins. He
was preceded in death by
his mother, Olivia McGuire; his father, James Viers; and his three
brothers, James William, Richard, and his twin, Jerry.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, October 11, at Woody
Funeral Home on Parham Road in Richmond, VA, 2-4 pm.
