

Daniel John Kalen, 56, of Richmond, Va., passed away September 13, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean Ferron Kalen and Captain Robert Lawrence Kalen. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Nancy McCoy Kalen; sons, Matthew John Kalen and wife, Thu Kalen, and Nicholas James Kalen; sisters, Linda Trice and Audrey Fritchman. Dan was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a Navy family on October, 17, 1953 and grew up in Arlington, Va., before settling in Richmond with his mother in 1968. He was a 1971 graduate of Benedictine High School and attended Virginia Tech for two years before entering an electrical apprenticeship in 1975. He worked as a union electrician under the Richmond I.B.E.W. Local for 26 years. He then pursued a career in retail management and insurance sales until his retirement in 2009. He was a member of both Salem Baptist and Messiah Christian Churches. He was a loving husband, proud father and devoted follower of Christ. Dan was an avid music enthusiast. He also appreciated the beauty of nature and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at Messiah Christian Church, 1501 Huguenot Rd., Midlothian, Va. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
