Daniel Joseph Schardein Jr.

SCHARDEIN, Daniel Joseph "Dan" Jr., 80, of Richmond, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on July 21, 2011, surrounded by his family. Dan was born on January 6, 1931, in Louisville, Ky., the son of the late Anna Marie and Daniel Joseph Sr. He was the oldest of two children. On April 25, 1953, he married the "love of his life" Jo Ann Margaret Royalty, his loving and devoted wife of 58 years. Dan proudly served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After his discharge, Dan pursued his love for science and graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. After graduation, Dan was employed by the Reynolds Metals Company as a Metallurgist and Chemist for 39 years, retiring as Director of R & D in 1990. Dan was awarded five United States Patents in the area of Science and Invention. Dan was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, brother and brother-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; sons, Dan, Greg and Brad; daughters-in-law, Teresa, Lois and Cindy; grandchildren whom he loved so much, Bret, Brian, Lauren, Brittney, Courtney and Tyler; great-granddaughter, Audrey; sister, Shirley Robinson; and brother and sister-in-law, James and Anne Royalty of Louisville, Ky.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., in Richmond, Va. Interment will take place at St. Michael's Catholic Church Columbarium at a later date.
