

Dr. Thomas Burwell Vaden, Jr., died Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI) in Detroit, Mich., after a long illness. Burwell was born January 11, 1943. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frances Dean Vaden and Thomas Burwell Vaden, Sr.; and his wife, Mary Parker Moncure Vaden. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Virginia Delaney-Black Vaden of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; his sister, F. Page Vaden Ritter; two stepsons, Thomas Rutherfoord Roper and Shaun Black of Chicago. He is also survived by his niece, Kim F. Ritter Kavanagh of Charlottesville; his nephew, William Thomas Ritter, Jr., and many cousins.
Dr. Vaden was a licensed Clinical Psychologist with the Tucker Psychiatric Clinic, graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1966, received his Masters Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968, his Doctorate Degree from the University of Virginia and Interned at Children's Hospital of Washington D.C. in 1972. Before joining Tucker in 1976 he had an individual private practice, was the School Psychologist and Consultant for Hanover County, Chief Psychologist at Memorial Guidance Clinic, Director of Research-Impulse Control Project Hillcrest Children's Center-Children's Hospital. He was an honorary member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, a member of the Sons of the Revolution in Virginia as well as a faithful supporter of animal welfare. For many years, Burwell sailed his boat "Mistral" out of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club (RRYC) and Indian Creek Yacht Club. He served as a Commodore for RRYC, where he was named Yachtsman of the Year in 1978. Burwell and his wife, Ginny enjoyed traveling with friends, but mostly loved spending time at their home in Boothbay, Maine. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220 or to the KCI Research Fund of Dr. Ulka Vaishampayan at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, 4100 John R, Detroit, Michigan 48201. As his doctor so poignantly remarked "he will be remembered for his ultimate chivalry and his fighting spirit."
Arrangements are being handled by Woody Funeral Home, in Richmond. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Road, Henrico, Va., 23229.
