

LONG, Harry R. Jr., 87, passed away in Richmond on April 28, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born in Pasquotank County, N.C. to Harry R. Long Sr. and Alice Rogerson Long. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Elizabeth Mary Kinsella Long, and beloved grandson, Thomas Patrick Davies. He is survived by daughters, Catherine Alice Long and Mary Elizabeth Harris; son-in-law, Steven M. Harris; grandson, Sean Christopher Harris; brothers, Linwood E. Long of Kinston, N.C. and Dr. Calvin L. Long of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nephews and nieces.
Harry was a World War II veteran, having served on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter "Ingham." He worked for Richmond's WRVQ-FM radio for many years as its chief engineer until his retirement in 1988. Following retirement, he enjoyed working part-time as a gardener for Richmond's historic John Marshall House until 2009. Harry was especially proud of his azaleas, which he lovingly tended at his home, and his pickup truck. He was a member of the Ingham Association and American Legion Post 84.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, where a funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 84, 1010 Borden Road, Richmond, Va. 23229-6716, or the American Heart Association .
