Salmon, Henry S. (“Sam”), Jr. (LTC, USA RET), 93, of Richmond died September 1, 2013. He is survived by his son John S. Salmon, daughter-in-law Emily J. Salmon, cousins Charles M. Bickley and Nancy Gage, niece Leslie C. Lindsay, and nephew Gregg A. Cason. His wife, Mary Janice Cange Salmon, predeceased him; they married on September 1, 1946. He was born in Jonesboro, Ark., on January 22, 1920, reared on a farm, and graduated from Arkansas State College in 1941. Having received a commission through the Army ROTC program, he was on active duty when America entered World War II. During the war, he commanded a mortar platoon and mortar company in the South Pacific, including the buildup in Australia and the campaigns for New Guinea and the Philippines. He remained in the Army and was subsequently stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky., Ft. Bliss, Tx., Ft. Greely, Alaska, Santa Monica, Cal., Korea, and Northern Virginia. During the California assignment (1958–1961), he was military liaison with the aerospace industry, and helped “discover” for the Army the helicopter later called the Huey. He retired in 1965, having earned an M.A. degree in business from George Washington University, and became business manager for publications of the American Psychological Association in Washington, D.C. He retired for good in 1975 and resided for several years in Charlottesville before moving to Richmond. After his wife died in 2003, he moved to Imperial Plaza, where he spent his last years and made many new friends. Until shortly before his death, he was happily independent and enjoyed weekly bridge games, golf with his buddies (young enough to be his sons) at least once a week, and numerous trips with his family. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be left at woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.
