James Morris Bagby, born November 12, 1938 in Richmond, Va., and passed away April 18, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sara Shelton Bagby and Everett Conway Bagby. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Ann Quarles Bagby; three children, Sara Bagby Farmer (James), Ann Bagby Pettersen (Lars), and Richard Morris Bagby; and five grandchildren, Katherine Brooke Pettersen, Samuel Richard Farmer, Jonas Kristian Pettersen, Caroline Hardwick Farmer, and Collin Lewis Robert Farmer. With deep roots in Louisa and Hanover Counties, James lived most of his adult life in Richmond. He received his B.A. degree in History and Political Science from the University of Richmond, M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Virginia, and Ph.D. in Educational Research and Development from The Ohio State University. His career was devoted to education including roles as: History and Mathematics teacher (Virginia Public Schools), Program Evaluator-Ohio Department of Education; Mathematics Supervisor and Assessment Specialist-Chesterfield/Hanover County Schools; Mathematics and Statistics adjunct professor-The Ohio State University and Virginia Commonwealth University; and Mathematics Specialist-the Virginia Department of Education. In support of his commitment to education, James was a member of the Virginia (Past President) and National Councils of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (Past President). Outside of education, James had profound interests in genealogical research and history and was an active member of the Virginia Genealogical Society, Friends of the Virginia State Archives, Louisa County Historical Society, Virginia Historical Society, and the Jamestown Society (Past Governor). James was also an elder and active member of Seventh Street Christian Church (DOC). His quiet presence, dry humor, sense of decorum, professionalism, and true devotion to family and friends will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., on Sunday, April 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at Seventh Street Christian Church (DOC), 4101 Grove Avenue, Richmond, on Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to an organization of choice.
