John Evans Gammel

He was born on December 31, 1943, in Hampton, VA where he lived most of his life. John was a 1962 graduate of Hampton High School and earned a B.S. in Engineering from the University of South Carolina in 1968.

He worked for the City of Hampton Planning Department where he rose to serve as Director before transitioning into a career in commercial real estate. Dedicated to his community, John was an avid supporter of the YMCA and served on the boards in both Hampton and Newport News. Never one to be the center of attention, John preferred to contribute quietly behind the scenes.

As a member of the Hampton Yacht Club, John enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay and spending time with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love and steady presence enriched the lives of all who knew him

John was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Katherine Gammel, and his sister, Janice Myles. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Gammel, his children, Michael Gammel (Gabi) of Wilmington, NC and Billy Gammel (Shannon) of Richmond; his grandchildren, Lily, Ella, and Reed; and his brother-in-law, Bart Myles of Richmond.

A memorial service will be held September 12, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Westhampton Memorial Park in the Mausoleum, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond, Virginia.
