John Walter West III passed away on November 20, 2023 at Westminster Canterbury. He was born in Richmond, VA on September 9, 1927, son of Judith Rhoads and John W. West Jr. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ramsey West and sons Thomas Webster (Amy), John Stephen (Andra) and daughter Judith Capelle, along with his four grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth, John Walter IV, Lillian Rose and Jackson Nicholas He is also survived by his sister Mary Maxwell West of Berkeley, CA, brother Norton West of Portland Maine and sister-in-law Joanne B. West of La Jolla, CA. He was predeceased by brother Phillip West and stepmother Mary Maxwell West. When John reached 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the PacifIC Theatre until the end of the war. He then returned to graduate from VA. Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Business Administration. His fIrst job was with B. Altman & Co. in White Plains, New York, then returning in 1957 to work for Miller & Rhoads with the various branch stores in Roanoke, Charlottesville and Richmond. Retiring after 25 years in retail, John was on sev. boards, including the Virginia Voice, Randolph Macon College and Gateway Homes. He also enjoyed volunteering for many civic organizations with a special love & dedication to the Miller & Rhoads Retirees group and the Virginia War Memorial. Another highlight for him was assisting in the writing of the book "Under the Clock" The History of M&R's 105 Years. He was a longtime member of Bon Air Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. John's greatest pleasures were spending time at Lily Brook Farm on the Calfpasture River in Goshen, VA. and working on numerous restoration projects for his family. The family would like to thank the staff of the Parsons Health Center for their loving concern & care of John. A memorial service will be held at a later date and memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
