

Margaret Mathias Matthews passed away peacefully on November 26, 2010 at the age of 98. She was born and raised in Gates County, North Carolina and lived in Suffolk, Charlottesville, Richmond and Henrico, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter F. Matthews, a granddaughter Emily N. Matthews, a sister Sally M. Freeman and four brothers, John Henry Mathias, Hal Mathias, Wallace Mathias, and Joseph Mathias.
She is survived by two sons, W. Forrest Matthews, Jr. and his wife Beverley of Henrico, Va. and Alan V. Matthews of Naples, Fl; four grandsons, Joseph N. Matthews, Alan F. Matthews, W. Paul Matthews, and Philip V. Matthews; two brothers, Herbert Mathias and his wife Marlene of Portsmouth, Va. and Raymond Mathias of Suffolk, Va; two sister in laws, Emily Mathias of Suffolk, Va. and Bonnie Mathias of Gates, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews, a very special friend Karen Shank, her many friends at Cedarfield as well as Cedarfield's wonderful staff.
Margaret retired from Miller & Rhoads and became a dedicated volunteer at First Baptist Church, Henrico Doctors Hospital and at Cedarfield. She loved playing bridge, making her watergate cake to share with everyone and spending time with family and friends.
She was an incredible wife, mother and grandmother, remembered for her unconditional love for family and friends and known for her genteel manner and beautiful smile.
The family extends their appreciation for the love and incredible care provided her by the health care staff of Cedarfield these past four years.
Services will be held at 12noon, on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment to follow at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2924 Brook Road, Richmond, VA 23220.
