

Mary Magda Hancock, 92, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2014. She was born in Koscise, Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Hancock of Courtland, Virginia, and her first son, David Gemzer. She is survived by her four children – Harry L. Hancock Jr. (and wife, Jayne) of Richmond, VA, James C. Hancock of Rocky Mount, NC., Margaret H. Duffey (and husband Terrance) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Amana Magda Hancock of Lynchburg, VA. Her surviving grandchildren are Katherine H. Yentzer, and Harry L. Hancock, III along with two great-grandchildren – David Corbin Yentzer and Sarah Magda Yentzer. Two brothers - Emery Magda and Julius Magda - and three half brothers - Richard Magda, Steve Magda, and Frank Magda, also survive her.
Mrs. Hancock served in the Woman’s Army Corp. (WAC) during World War II. In her fifties she graduated from Paul D. Camp Community College with an Associates of Sciences degree. She was active in the Archaeological Society of Virginia and served as state secretary for many years. She was a member of Courtland Baptist Church and enjoyed opera, gardening, crafting, and rock hunting.
A memorial service will be held at the Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel at 3:00 on Wednesday, May 14. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
