Paul Arthur Zamecnik passed away after a long battle with leukemia at age 61. Beloved husband of 34 years to Susan Zamecnik (née Griffin), Paul passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. Paul was born April 19, 1960 to the late Norman and LaDonna Jean Zamecnik. He is the son-in-law of Edward Griffin and the late Barbara Griffin. He is survived by his wife Susan; children Julia (Kiran) Moghe, Brian (fiancée Tasya Tsygankova), and Matthew; sister Linda (Jim) Dean; sisters-in-law Deborah and Lynn Griffin; and several nieces and nephews.
Paul was a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in electrical engineering and of Harvard University with a Masters in Business Administration. He had recently retired from Genworth Financial after over a decade of service. Although Paul spent the majority of his career in the business world, his first love was always engineering. He had an engineer's perspective and was a great problem solver, something sincerely appreciated by his family. Paul was an extremely devoted husband and father, and his concern for his family centered his life. His children were his greatest joy and passion.
After getting the difficult diagnosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia over 16 years ago, Paul was committed to learning more about his disease and to raising money for leukemia research. For several years, he participated in clinical trials at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where Paul got satisfaction knowing his involvement would help future leukemia patients. Paul combined his love of long distance cycling with his fundraising for many years. He did several century rides through Team in Training in Lake Tahoe, Maine, Maryland, and Arizona to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society–where he served on the board.
Paul was a member of the Richmond Area Biking Association and enjoyed wonderful weekly rides with his friends followed by beers at Kindred Spirit Brewing. He also served on the board of Richmond Gentry, where he loved organizing events and growing close to his fellow members.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Woody Funeral Home-Parham, 1771 North Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Paul’s memory. The donation link is provided below under the word " Donations."
