Robert Charles Sass, 87, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. Born on January 16, 1939, Robert lived a life marked by dedication, achievement, and service.
A proud alumnus of Michigan State University (MSU) and the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School (USN-OCS), Robert earned his MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. His career as a mechanical engineer and HVAC contractor was distinguished by his oversight of the HVAC system installation at the Richmond Federal Reserve Building-a testament to his expertise and professionalism.
Robert served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1971, completing multiple tours in Vietnam. Beyond his military service, he was deeply committed to his community. A former MSU gymnast and student coach, he later coached Special Olympics swimmers and competed as a Senior Olympics swimmer, earning medals for his skill and dedication. An avid birder and member of the National Audubon Society, Robert found joy in nature's beauty. He also graced the stage with the WEAG Master's Theatre.
Faith played an important role in Robert's life; he worshiped at both West End Assembly of God and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. His determination and caring spirit were evident to all who knew him.
Robert is survived by his sons Wayne Robert Sass and William Falke Sass; his younger brother George G. Sass; his cherished companion of ten years, Barbara Cook; four beloved grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his godson Chris Edlund. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Joseph Sass and Helen Yengel Sass, as well as his sister Grace Edlund.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association in Robert's memory. May his legacy of service, love, and determination continue to inspire all who knew him.
