

COX, Walter Scott II, went to be with his Savior on February 1, 2011. He was born September 30, 1927 to Margaret Wilson Shive and Frederic Hamilton Cox of Ashland, Va. He is survived by his beloved wife and companion of 57 years, Constance Young Cox; two sons and their wives, Walter Scott Cox III and Elaine Thoren Cox, Dr. Robert Young Cox and Katherine Tennent Cox; five grandchildren, Lauren Susan Cox, Robert Wilson Young Cox, Kimberly Garland Cox, Abby Elizabeth Cox and Margaret Elaine Cox; brother, Frederic Hamilton Cox Jr.; and sister, Mary Garland Cox Johnston.
He was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy of Gainesville, Ga., and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. He was a graduate of both the Infantry Officer Candidate School and Paratrooper School at Fort Benning, Ga. Lt. Cox served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment in Korea. He received a battlefield promotion, was recommended for the Silver Star by his regimental commander, and he received the Bronze Star with "V" for valor. Cox was employed by Exxon for 10 years and operated his own distributorship for 30 years. He was a strong follower of Jesus Christ, and a very active member of First Presbyterian Church of South Boston, Va., serving as a Sunday School teacher, treasurer, deacon and elder. He served on the Halifax Regional Hospital Board for 34 years and was hospital president for five years. He was also an active board member with Hargrave Military Academy for 20 years and was made an honorary graduate. He was a life member of the Commonwealth Club. Besides a passion for his faith, Cox was a gifted financier and loved to study the stock market. His wise advice and open-handed generosity benefited many. He was also a beloved father, grandfather, sage, and friend, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m., Third Presbyterian Church, 600 Forest Avenue in Richmond, with a reception to follow at the church. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. Interment private.
