William McArthur Jr., born in Richmond, Va. on May 23, 1931, died on December 6, 2011. He was the son of the late William McArthur Bird Sr. and Maude Patrick. He served for four years in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad after 41 years of service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus, Council 395, and an active member and friend to many at the Tuckahoe YMCA. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Wingate Bird; daughter, Tammy Jones (Mike); son, Robert Bird, (Suzanne "Sue Bee"); and four grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew Nickell, Emily and Meghan Bird. The family would like to thank the Tuckahoe Rescue Squad and the nurses and staff at Beth Sholom for the loving care he received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad. Graveside services will be private. Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
