NOE, The Rev. Dr. William "Bill" Stanton, 89, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019. He was born December 7, 1929, in Greenville, N.C., to the late Rev. Alexander Constantine Davis Noe and Elizabeth Barber Noe. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anita; and leaves behind two daughters, Lori Bocrie and husband, Jerry, Lisa Jennings; and grandson, Austin Jennings.
Dr. Noe attended Porter Military Academy, Charleston, S.C., University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. (B.A. and M.Div.), Study Abroad at the University of Vienna (when Austria was still occupied by the Russians), Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Guggenheim Fellow, Fulbright Scholar at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va. (Ph.D).
After serving as Captain in The U.S. Air Force in Hornafyordur, Iceland, he was editor of an International theological quarterly, Episcopal Priest, founded St. Peter's by-the-Sea, Swansboro, N.C.; priest-in-charge, Church of Our Saviour, Montpelier, Va., for 20-plus years, supply priest in 35 different Episcopal churches in Virginia, founder of the Study Abroad program and Chairman, department of German, Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Va. (33 years), American Association of University Professors (former president for State of Virginia), member of Modern Language Association, English Speaking Union, founder and former owner of Interport Corporation. He also volunteered for Assistant Chief of Volunteer Fire Department, Adopt-a-Highway program, Richmond Symphony, and two years as a member of the Medical College of Virginia/VCU Institutional Review Board.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va., the family will receive friends at the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be immediately following at Fork Church, Hanover County, directions will be available after the service.
