

Barbara Crum Spell, 80, died peacefully Saturday June 28, 2014 at Hospice Ministries. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Monday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Highland Colony. Visitation will be from 12noon till service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
Barbara was born on September 20, 1933 in Jackson, Mississippi, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter William Crum (Mildred Willene Weathersby). Barbara was baptized and a life long member of First Baptist Church. She graduated from Central High School, attended Mississippi State College for Women, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi in 1955. While attending Ole Miss, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She was married in August 1959 to Bobby Gene Spell, M.D. Together, they moved to Galveston, TX and Little Rock Arkansas while he completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery. On August 25, 1962 the couple welcomed their first child, Robert Gene Spell. While in Texas and Arkansas, Barbara taught first grade in the local public school systems. She and her family returned to Jackson, MS and welcomed their daughter, Laurie Elizabeth Spell Browning on April 27, 1965.
Barbara served many years as a church youth choir sponsor, substitute teacher, a member of the Debutante Club of Mississippi, and was an active and sustaining member of the Junior League of Jackson. She was a member of Recess, La-Soiree, and Palladian luncheon clubs, and the Art Guild. She enjoyed gardening, her pets, her many dear friends, and most of all her family.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son; and, is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, William Fleming Browning, III, her grandson, William Fleming Browning, IV, her daughter-in-law, Donna Buford Spell Watts, granddaughter, Lillian Margaret Spell, and grandson, Porter Buford Spell. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Lee Crum Lampton, and her husband, Leslie Barton Lampton, Jr. her brother-in law, William Earl Spell and his wife, Donna Kalland Spell, 7 nephews, and 5 neices.
