Bewey Dean Mott Bowden was born August 23,1927, to Ollie Bewey Mott and Lessie Lois Mott. She left this broken, fallen, grammarless world on May 20, 2024 and took her first breath in a world of grace, incomprehensible love, and perfect syntax! She is now united with Jesus, her Savior, and her Joe, whom she has missed terribly since his exit from this world in October. She met Joseph Bowden when she was a student at Mississippi College, and they knew immediately that they had found true love.
Bewey was a strong, highly influential lady who loved God and loved his word. In her early years, she taught English at Hardy Jr. High. Later, she taught speech and drama at Belhaven (College) University for many years and directed many plays. She was and is dearly loved by her students. She also taught pulpit speech at Reformed Theological Seminary and was also the Dean of Women there.
She was a teacher at heart, and people both loved and feared her. Her standards were very high. She was especially passionate about teaching pastors to preach the word of God with great respect and dignity.
In her later years, she picked up a paintbrush and became “one of Mississippi’s Finest Artists.” She brought color into the world and glorified God with her beautiful artwork. It was easy to see her heart and personality through her colorful paintings, many of which were paths showing the way out. Today, she took the path that led the way out and is finally home with the God she loved.
She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Wilkinson (Steve), three grandchildren, Joshua Wilkinson (Beth), Erin Bainton (Matt), Caleb Wilkinson, and seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bowden, her father, Ollie Bewey Mott, her mother, Lessie Lois Mott, her sister Mary Ann Bullock, her sister, Joyce Beck, and her brother, Billy Mott. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who love her to pieces.
One of her students from the older Belhaven days had this to say about her. “Bewey was Awesome! A Light! A Rarity! A Shero! A Class Act! She made everyone she touched a better person.” It is a great description of her.
The world will miss her sound Bible teaching, her grammar columns, her funny stories, her constant correction of “lay” and “lie”, and her wit. She truly made a mark on this world, and she helped produce a lot of good preachers who, also, will continue to make a mark on this world for Jesus because of her teaching.
A visitation for Bewey will be Saturday May 25, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church, 750 S Pear Orchard Rd, Ridgeland, Mississippi 39157, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, after the service everyone is invited to take a few minutes to visit with each other and then join the family for the Pavillion service that will start at 1PM at Lakewood Memorial Park 6000 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, MS 39209.
