Charlotte Ezell Salter, 89, of Jackson, died Monday April 9, 2012 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Visitation will be held on Friday beginning at 1:00 PM followed by services at 3:00 PM all at Wright and Ferguson in Ridgeland.
A native of Louisville, MS, Charlotte was born August 7, 1922, the daughter of Joe Brooks and Katherine Gay Ezell. She graduated Valedictorian of Louisville High School in 1939.
Charlotte met the love of her life, her husband Cary, while attending MSCW. They were married June 18, 1944. During the war she served as safety supervisor in a munitions plant at Prairie, MS. After the war she taught school before following her husband to The University of Mississippi where she received her master's degree in special education. After graduation, they moved to Shaw, MS where they purchased a pharmacy and began a family. They moved to Jackson in 1961 where she lovingly took care of her home and her two daughters.
With an empty nest, she went back to work. First, for the Mississippi State Pharmacy Association and then in many other positions including proof reading for the Mississippi legislature. She was a faithful Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church for many years serving as Sunday school teacher and volunteering in the church office until her retirement. A bright and active person, she was always involved in the community and enjoyed participating in activities with groups like Mended Hearts, WMU Circle and Concordia Bridge Club. Her vibrant spirit and never-give-up attitude far outweighed her diminutive stature.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Laura Sue Lofton.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Cary W. Salter, Jr. of Jackson; her two daughters, Florence Gay Salter of Jackson and Katherine (Kay) Kaigler Salter of Hattiesburg; one sister, Jo Evelyn Fox of Louisville, MS; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Memorials may be made to Mended Hearts Scholarship Fund, ATTN: Mr. Howard Kerce, 216 Hawthorn Drive, Madison, MS 39110 or to the charity of your choice .
