Dorothy leaves her only child, Catherine “Cathie” Phillippi and son in-law, F.M. “Mark” Phillippi IV of Ridgeland, and three beloved grandchildren, Madeline (22 y), Julia (20 y), and Owen (17y). She is also survived by sister Ellen McDonell and brother in-law Kevin of Germantown, TN; their children, nephew Robert McDonell of Memphis, TN, nephew Daniel (Katherine) McDonell of Nashville, TN and their children, great nieces and nephews Caelan, Seraphina, Ailsa, and Fiona. She also leaves behind nephew Mark Daniel of Hendersonville, TN, and great niece Abby. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers John and Lloyd, and niece Sharon Daniel.
Dorothy was a strong, independent, smart woman who loved her family and was a hard worker. She grew up in Clinton, MS and graduated in Class of 1962 from Clinton High School. She went to Hinds Community College where she was a Hinds High Stepper. She graduated with a Psychology degree from University of Southern Mississippi in 1966. She began her masters in Psychology there, but when her brother Lloyd was widowed with a young daughter she dropped everything and moved to Baton Rouge to help out. That is where she met her husband Quincy Prestridge. They were married in 1970 and in 1972 Dorothy had her only child, Cathie. She and Quincy divorced in 1980 and she and Cathie moved to Clinton, MS to be close to her mother, Wilma. Dorothy worked in various agencies of state government in Human Resources. In 1995 she moved to Biloxi to work for the department of Marine Resources where she endured the devastation of hurricane Katrina. Losing everything, she chose to return and rebuild. She loved the water and everything about the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After retirement in 2009, she moved to Jackson to be close to her daughter and help with grandchildren. She truly valued education, which led her to earn a masters in public administration from Belhaven University at the age of 70.
Dorothy loved a clean house, making a list, hot dark coffee, cold ice water, English muffins, flowers, cats, books, music, and vodka. She loved having pretty clothes and nails, and she loved to accessorize. From broaches, scarfs, hats, and jewelry, she was always “decked to the nines”. She loved living near the Reservoir in her later years. As her mobility deteriorated she would often drive around its banks just to look at the water. Dorothy was a loner and other than her family and a few sweet friends she treasured her cats, Sugar and Spice. They were a great source of joy and companionship to her.
Dorothy was tough and stubborn, determined and brave. She was fiercely independent and always willing to help her family. She did not want her passing to be sad for anyone. She left a legacy of great love to her daughter, her greatest accomplishment, who can now carry that to the rest of the world. We will miss you, Dottie.
