On the 18th day of September 2022, Elsie “Nanny” Bartholomew, 96, peacefully passed away at Ridgeland Place, in Ridgeland, MS. Elsie was born July 26, 1926 to Estel and Ruby Kimbrell at their home in Roundaway, Mississippi. She was married to the late William “Alfred” Bartholomew on April 1, 1946 and was the mother of the late Altha Rebecca “Becky” Carroll.
Elsie grew up in the Mississippi Delta where her father was a sharecropper. She was the third oldest of 8 children, all of whom have since passed away, except a younger sister, Norma Palasini. Elsie and Alfred were longtime residents of Jackson, MS then moved to Kosciusko in 1996 To be closer to their daughter Becky. Before leaving Jackson, she had worked as a teller for Deposit Guaranty Bank. Elsie loved family, children and people in general, helping with caring for her elderly parents, leading a Girls Scout troop, as well as being found doing such things as styling hair for residents in the nursing home where her parents lived.
She and her husband belonged to an Airstream club and enjoyed traveling all over the continental United States to include making a trip to Alaska. She also enjoyed staying local, taking a drive along the Natchez Trace Parkway (especially Rocky Springs) and enjoying a picnic lunch at one of the sites. Elsie loved stopping to enjoy a cup of coffee and a cookie on her patio. A passion of hers was to write letters to keep up with and encourage her loved ones. Her letters to one of her great granddaughters while at college was collected and treasured. There was always the constant “love” line of “have a coke and burger on me” with $1 included in each letter. She enjoyed sewing and preparing a good southern home cooked meal served on “real” plates.
Another favorite pastime was fishing, especially with her beloved family members. As sweet as she was though, you had better watch out if you were playing a game of Rook with her. She knew her game and wasn’t going to just let you win. Elsie, better known as “BB”, or “Nanny” to her family will be greatly missed. She lived life to the fullest. She leaves a big empty space that will not be able to be filled.
Elsie was a member of a baptist church wherever she lived. She was saved and baptized at Roundaway Baptist Church. Her favorite hymns were “Victory in Jesus” and “Jesus Loves Me.” A Bible verse that was dear to her heart was John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish but have everlasting life.” She often would share a story of how her daughter as a little girl would say, “only forgotten son” instead of “begotten” son.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Bartholomew; her daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Carroll; and grandson, Henry “Hank” Carroll. Also, by her parents, Estel and Ruby Kimbrell; brothers and sisters, “Buddy” Kimbrell (Ruth), Aggie Robinson (Bill), Jibba Kimbrell (Beatrice), Donna Mae Kimbrell, Joann Jabour (Alec), and Jill Kimbrell.
Elsie is survived by her son in law, Charles “Chuck” Carroll (Jean) of Houston, MS; grandsons, Charles “Shannon” Carroll (Pam) of Madison, MS, William “Bubba” Carroll (Tina) of TN, Joshua Carroll (Stephanie) of Macon, MS, Caleb Carroll (LeeAnn) of Houston, TX; 16 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and her sister, Norma Palasini (Ellis) of Leland, MS.
Services will be held at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 10:30am. Visitation will precede the funeral at 9:00am.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks for the loving care provided by Kare-In-Home Hospice and all of their wonderful nurses. The family could not have gone through this difficult time without the loving caregivers Regenia Torrey and Symya Warnsley.
