

George Edward Bishop of Jackson, MS, was called to be with his Savior on August 6, 2016, at the age of eighty-five. He was born January 3, 1931, in Ellisville, MS, moving with his family to Hattiesburg, where he attended first through twelfth grades of public school, graduating in 1949. He is also a 1953 graduate of Mississippi State College (now M.S.U.), residing his freshman year in Old Main Dormitory, as his father previously had done. He was a member of Sigma Chi Social Fraternity. As the result of receiving many outstanding honors such as president of ODK Honor Society and the designation of Distinguished Air Force ROTC student in 1953, he was listed in Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges.
He served two years’ active Duty with the USAF, retiring with the rank of Captain from the Mississippi Air National Guard. George was employed by the Allstate Insurance Company for 32 years, working in a variety of positions in various cities, ending his career in Jackson in personnel management. He was a long time member of the Gideon’s Bible Society, deriving great satisfaction from presentation of New Testaments to military inductees.
He was a member of “The Roosters,” a men’s weekly coffee club, the Jackson Photographic Society, the Mid Mississippi Radio Control Club, the Jackson Touchdown Club, and the 120 Club. He served as a faithful member of Jackson First Presbyterian Church since 1956 and was a participant in the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Huff Bishop, and loving nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 1390 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39202.
A graveside service will be held at the Ellisville Cemetery, Wednesday, August 10, at 11:30 am. A Celebration of Life will be at First Presbyterian Church, Thursday, August 11, at 11:00 am.
