Papa Jack, as he was known to his family and friends, was born November 7, 1922 in Hernando, Mississippi to Harvey and Susie Dunaway Nail where he grew up playing sports and being active in the Future Farmers of America raising prize winning cattle. After attending Mississippi State he moved to Jackson where he met the love of his life Mary Lee Berryhill and was married. World War II and he moved his wife to Las Vegas, Nevada where he trained waist gunners in B17 bombers. After the war they moved back to Jackson where he took a job with the state Highway Department where he worked 44 years before retiring.
He raised his family in the Broadmoor subdivision where he and Mary were charter members of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Jack was active in all aspects of his children's activities volunteering to coach baseball and was a long time boy scout master even after his boys had reached the level of eagle scout. There are many boys who were beneficiaries of his time and loving direction he willingly shared with all. His passion was gardening and spent any spare time raising flowers and vegetables to share what he grew with others.
