

Henry Gordon Shamburger, retired Director of the Pastoral Care Department at Baptist Health services, passed away on July 14 at St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS. Chaplain Shamburger was born Sept. 3, 1925, in Meridian,MS and graduated from Meridian High School. He served three years in the US Navy during WWII and fought in the South pacific. He received BA and MA degrees from Mississippi College and a MRE degree and Clinical Pastoral Education certificate from new Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Chaplain Shamburger served full-time pastorates for 16 years followed by more than 28 years as Director of Pastoral Care at Miss. Baptist Medical Center.
Gordon was elected to Who’ Who in Mississippi and was a fellow in the College of Chaplains of the Baptist Chaplain’s Assoc. and served on the State Mental Board and on the Christian Action Commission of the Miss. Baptist convention Board. While a member of the Optimist Club of Jackson for 21 years, Gordon served as President of the Jackson Optimist Club and as Lt. Gov. of the Miss-AL District of Optimist International.
Gordon was a member of Calvary Baptist church, Jackson, MS, for over 50 year where he served the Lord as deacon, Sunday School teacher, Brotherhood Director,Training Union director, Homebound Dept. visitor, and on various church committees. After retiring in 1991, Gordon and his wife Dorothy volunteered as missionaries to Brazil and served as volunteers to indigenous peoples in Fairbanks, Alaska at the Friendship Baptist Church.
Gordon was an avid hunter and fisherman and sports enthusiast. He and Dorothy also enjoyed traveling, having toured widely throughout the U.S., Europe and South America.
Chaplain Shamburger was preceded in death by his parents Henry Gordon Shamburger, Sr. and Sidnie Tate Shamburger of Meridian and grandson Jimmy Shamburger of Magee. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Talbert Shamburger of Madison, son, Gaines Shamburger of Clinton and daughter Trish Melech of Tampa, FL, sister Cecile Kelly of Hattiesburg, granddaughters Dr. Susan Shamburger of Tupelo and Dr. Amye Shamburger of Brandon, grandson Parker Melech of St. Petersburg, FL, and five great-grandchildren.
