Jack was born in Trafford, AL to Eugene and Nita Self, and grew up in Rosa, AL. After graduating from Auburn University, he began his 63 year career in the poultry industry.
He joined Cal-Maine Foods in 1968, and was originally stationed at the Mendenhall, MS production unit. He was a valued member of the Cal-Maine Foods family for over 46 years, and played an important role in the Company’s growth and development. Under his guidance, Cal-Maine Foods now employs 2439 employees. Jack served as a great mentor and teacher to many managers throughout the Company. Most of Cal-Maine’s management implement production programs designed by Jack on a daily basis. In his later years, he had operational responsibility for Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi locations.
Jack was Vice President of Operations-Production, but most of his “students” viewed him as a father-figure instead of a teacher. His favorite place was the Edwards, MS farm, which he saw grow from a few small chicken houses to a several million bird farm. Although his office was at the Jackson Corporate Building, Jack’s heart was always with the management in the hen houses. Jack was highly respected throughout the industry, and built a legacy that will survive him in the years to come.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and wife, Sara. Survivors include his wife Shirley, sisters Carol Gray and Margaret Williams, daughter and son-in law, Jan and Jim Bess, and a host of step children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
