John Salvo Barranco, Sr., 95, passed away peacefully at his home on October 21, 2021, with his loving wife and family at his side. John was born in Jackson, MS, on April 7, 1926. By living a life of quiet dignity and without complaint, John was the epitome of what the Greatest Generation represents. He loved his family, his Catholic faith, and his country.
After graduating from Central High School, John fought in WWII as a member of the 306th Bombardment Group and later fought in the Korean War as a member of the Air Force. Once home from the war, John married the love of his life and the best dance partner, Camille Griffith Barranco. After 71 years and five children together, he continued to joke that, “he thought it was going to work out.” The patriarch of the Barranco family, John passed along his love of music to his five children. He was the drum major at Central High and LSU. There were many weekends spent during his college years playing in New Orleans with Louis Prima and Sam Butera at the Carousel Bar.
John had a lifelong career in the insurance business, but his true love, along with his music, was the great outdoors, which included scouting with his sons. He served on the BSA Council, was a member of the Order of the Arrow, and received the Silver Beaver Award. John’s motto for every aspect of his life was, “Be Prepared.” John was also a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council at St. Richard Catholic Church. John will be remembered for his quick wit, quiet disposition, and appreciation for all things Italian.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Vincent, his sister, Josephine, youngest son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Teresa. Survivors are his wife, Camille, and four children, John Barranco, Jr., Pam Barranco Jew (Sam), Vince Barranco, Lesa Barranco Nuzzo (Al), and daughter-in-law, Jené Barranco. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
John lived a long life that is worthy to be proud of and his family is at peace knowing he is with his Savior and beloved son, Michael, and his favorite little dog, Buddy.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 25, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church. This will be followed by military honors at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Richard Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
