
Manship Phelps, 93, of Ridgeland, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 11th, at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Ridgeland. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, April 10th and one hour prior to service on Saturday.
Mr. Phelps, a native of Jackson, was born October 24, 1921. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating early, he enlisted in the Navy, where he fought for his country in World War II. After his career in the Navy, Manship and his brothers owned and operated the former Crescent Laundry and Dry Cleaning in Jackson until his retirement in 1986. He was a longtime member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church where he served on numerous committees and was a faithful and humble servant.
He was very active in his community where he held the title of Commodore of the Jackson Yacht Club, President of the Southwest Linen Supply Association where he was named Man of the Year. He and his brothers were descendants of the late Charles Henry Manship, former mayor of Jackson, who built The Manship House in 1857. The State of Mississippi acquired the Manship House in 1975 to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now operates as The Manship House Museum.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dudley Gordon & Ruby Traylor Phelps, and his two brothers, Dudley Phelps, Jr. and William Traylor Phelps.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Roxie Doss Phelps; daughters, Judi Phelps Adams of Flora, Sara Phelps Hewes (Andy) of Houston, TX, and Vickie Stewart of Flora; and sons, Charles Michael King of Ridgeland, Steven Anthony Phelps (Gina) of Madison, and Richard Doss Phelps (Janna) of Madison. He is also survived by 10 loving grandchildren and 10 loving great grandchildren whom he loved with all of his heart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Colonial Heights Baptist Church, 444 Northpark Drive, Ridgeland, MS 39157.
