Margueritte Lane Denny Ransom, 81, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014. She was a devout Christian and is therefore now resting in peace with her Lord Jesus Christ. Margueritte was born on November 8, 1932, in Marks, MS to the late Walter McKennon Denny, Sr. and Evelyn Lane Cox Denny. In 1941 the family, which included her brother, Walter M. Denny, Jr., moved to Jackson, MS. She attended Bailey Junior High School, Central High School and Millsap’s College, before completing her degree in French at Duke University. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, enabling her to study at the University of Toulouse, France. She received her Masters of Arts Degree in French from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. She taught French and world history at Jackson Preparatory school for several years, before being employed by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health until her retirement.
She is survived by her son, John Charles Ransom (Shawn) of Concord, NC. She is also survived by her brother, Walter (Peggy), nephews Walter M. Denny, III (Jennifer) of Houston, TX, Michael P. Denny (Betsy) of Madison, MS and niece Ruth Denny Berry (Walter) of Birmingham, AL. There are also seven great-nephews and nieces; all of who shared loving relationships with “Aunt Marga” as she was known. Until her death she stayed in contact with numerous Denny and Cox cousins and their families throughout the south and west.
Margueritte was a life- long member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. She sat under the leadership of five pastors, from Dr. R. Girard Lowe to Dr. Ligon Duncan. Among the many church activities she cherished were sermons by Dr. Duncan, her Sunday school class taught by Bill Wymond, and her circle of many friends. She particularly liked to contact and visit with members of the congregation who were sick or disabled. She was fast friends with a group of ladies who regularly celebrated birthdays and many of their occasions together: Maryla Delaney, Theresa Younce and Toni Bell.
Funeral Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00am Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church parlor before the service, beginning at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Missions Program of First Presbyterian Church, 1390 North State St. Jackson, MS 39202.
