

She was born Nov. 19, 1930, in New Orleans to Jasper A. and Hilda Ashford Cragwall. She graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
She married John A. Welsch, Jr., on May 28, 1955, in Wilmett, Illinois. For several years, she was active in the Jackson Chapter of the League of Women Voters and served as a host for the chapter’s public affairs television show “Learn with the League.” She and her husband were very active in Mississippians for Educational Broadcasting.
She was a member of the St. Dominic’s Hospital Auxiliary for many years, having served as a committee chair, officer and president. She was also a volunteer at St. Dominic’s Hospital for more than 35 years serving more than 10,000 volunteer hours. A renowned quilter, she was a member and past president of the Mississippi Quilt Association. She was also a member of the Jackson Stitchery Guild and taught quilting classes in the Millsaps College enrichment program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John A. Welsch, Jr., and daughter Gretchen Welsch Pumphrey.
She is survived by daughters Hilda (Bill) Sallack of Denton, Texas; Blanche (Richie) Woolwine of Brandon; sons John Welsch III of Salt Lake City, Utah; Gilland Welsch of Murray, Kentucky; and Jasper (Patricia) Welsch of Madison; son-in-law Mike (Diane) Pumphrey of Madison; brother Jay (Kathy) Cragwall of Grand Rapids, Michigan; six grandchildren, Matt Sallack, Anna Sallack (Joe) Lawlor, Joe (Brooke) Pumphrey, Thomas Welsch, Lucas Sparks, Brett Woolwine, and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at Parkway Memorial Funeral Home in Ridgeland. A funeral Mass will immediately follow. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
