Opal was born October 1, 1929 in Franklinton, Louisiana. She graduated from Franklinton High School where she served as treasurer for her senior class. After studying at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Opal began her career at Baton Rouge Savings & Loan. Opal was in charge of the Drive-In Express Window. Such an operation was comparatively new in the savings and loan field at that time. She had to learn and manage the operation of the drive-in facilities and also the operation of the teller receipt machine which was used to handle a complete transaction in less than 1 minute. Cutting edge in 1955! She also had responsibility of handling all night depository transactions. Eventually Opal earned her way to a VP position through much hard work and dedication.
Upon retirement, Opal enjoyed traveling. To be close to family in her later years of life, she moved to St. Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Osborn and Eva Simmons, and her siblings, Howard, Janella, and Evelyn. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews.
Thank you to the staff at St. Catherine’s and Compassus Hospice Care for the compassionate care provided.
