

P. Leo Hughes, Jr., went to be the Lord and his mother, Mable Estelle Rogers Hughes and father, P.L. Hughes, on June 3rd, 2013. He fought a courageous battle with leukemia during the past year. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Services will be on Thursday, at 11:00am at First Baptist Church in Madison with a one hour Visitation Before. Burial will be at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
Leo spent his young years in Possum Neck, MS., and later moved to Gluckstadt, MS. His family bought a 640 acre dairy farm and Leo and his four siblings were very active in making it a success. He often joked about not working any job that required getting up at 3:45 am. Leo graduated from Madison-Ridgeland High School with many awards including Mr. M-R High. He was 4-H King and earned a scholarship to Mississippi State. He was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alfa Fraternity and studied Veterinarian medicine. Leo was drafted into the army and served two years in Stuttgart, Germany, then returned to acquire a BS Degree in Business from Mississippi College. He continued his studies at University of Southern Mississippi and graduated with a MBA. He was a claims specialist at State Farm Insurance Company for 33 years. Leo was an avid Mississippi State fan and enjoyed golfing and boating. He was very active in the Jaycees and held almost all local offices and elected Mississippi Interior Director where he traveled to Costa Rica and Dublin, Ireland. He was the president of the Natchez Trace Village Homeowners Association after moving to Madison in ’73. Leo and Jamie Anne Richards Hughes got married on 7 Sep 58 and had 3 children; Peaster Leo Hughes III (Terri), Mable Annette Hughes McDonal and James Weldon Hughes (Alice). Leo has 6 grandchildren; Slater Terry Hughes, Brecken Claire Hughes, James Weldon Hughes II, Harleigh Danielle Hughes, Jamilee Hughes McDonal and Darryl Adam McDonal II. He is survived by one brother, Weldon Albert Hughes (Virginia), and three sisters, twin sister Joy McClendon (W.K.). Joan Huckaby, Shirley Harper (Leonard). He had 17 nieces and nephews.
