Rhoden aka “Tiny” was born in Vicksburg, MS to Rhoden E. Hallman and Lila Grace White on September 12, 1932 and passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022. He was raised on a farm in rural Bolton, MS while attending school in Edwards, MS.
Tiny, as he was called by his family and close friends, was a larger than life southern gentleman with a towering stature and build that humbled and commanded the attention of anyone that met him, but he had the gentlest, kindest and most loving soul you’d ever meet.
He took great pride not only in his Mississippi heritage, but also in his 20 year career service to his country in the U.S. Army. During his service, he was in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
During his service, he married his first wife, Hazel, and went on to have two children, a son, Wes, who gave him two grandchildren, Brad and Chasity, and a daughter, June, who gave him one grandson.
He was someone who had a great love of life, laughter and a firm understanding of what was important – the simplicity of enjoying life with the ones you love and his great love of God’s creatures, ranging from raising pigs, peacocks and many varieties as he called them, to his grandchildren, to his “cluckers” aka chickens that he raised with his second wife, Jean, in Bolton, MS.
Alongside the crowning achievement of the birth of his two children, his proudest achievement was marrying the great love of his life in 1968, Jean, whom he called “Sugar Babe” for almost 54 years until he drew his last breath as God put his arms around him and called him home.
Together with Jean, he helped raise two step-children, John and Janiece. To them, Tiny was their “father” in every way and became the most significant male figure in their lives by loving them unconditionally, creating a bond to withstand time.
John gave him two granddaughters, Shannon and Robin. Janiece also gave him two granddaughters, Shelly and Lynsey. He was known to his grandchildren as Paw or Big Paw. Together, his granddaughters gave him five great grandchildren who have gone on to give him four great-great grandchildren who call him “Sad Sack”, a nickname with a funny joke started by Tiny, then turned back on him by his son, John, that stuck.
With tearful eyes and heavy hearts, we lost a great man who we all dearly adored and loved. As a golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands put to rest, God suddenly broke our hearts to prove to us that he only takes the best.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 31, 2022 at Parkway Funeral Home at 1:30 pm with the service immediately following in the chapel at 2:00 pm.
