Robert (Bob) E. Mathis , 89, longtime resident of Jackson and more recently of Nashville, Tn. passed away peacefully on November 23, 2014. He was married to the late Patricia Davidge Mathis for over 61 years.
Bob was born November 3, 1925 in Greenville, Ms.. Just after his eighteenth birthday he joined the U.S. Army . In the Pacific Campaign, he fought in the Philippine Islands and Okinawa, where he was wounded in battle and awarded a Purple Heart.
Upon his return from the war, Bob attended the University of Houston where he studied radio and television broadcasting. He was one of the original members of WLBT in Jackson where he worked for 25 years.
He was a long time member of Central Presbyterian Church and Briarwood Presbyterian in Jackson.
He is survived by two sons, Mike Mathis of Nashville and Bill Mathis of Brentwood, TN.; as well as four grandchildren, Susan, Kelly, Justin and Nichole; and many loving nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his wife Pat(6-5-2014), as well as his brother Bill and sister Eleanor.
Visitation will be from 11am -1pm Saturday at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1 pm .
