

Irma Harris Smith, 82, of Martinsville, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Fredericksburg, on November 25, 1930 to the late Charles F. Harris and Irene Williams Harris. She graduated from Virginia State University in Petersburg with a B.S. degree in Library Science. Irma was retired after thirty seven years as a Librarian with the Henry County Public School Systems and worked in the Carver Elementary and Fieldale Collinsville High School. She was a member of Grace United Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lee Smith and one sister, Irene H. Washington.
Surviving are one sister Charlene H. Chambers of Salem, and a special niece and caregiver, Michelle Ridgley of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Grace United Presbyterian Church of Martinsville with Rev. Jane Johnson officiating, interment will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Irma will lie in state in the chapel of Collins Funeral Home of Bassett in cooperation with Community Funeral Service of Ridgeway, until she is taken to the church at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
