Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Billy proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in October 1961. He served during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Chu Lai Combat Base. His years in the Marines shaped the strength, discipline, and unwavering work ethic that defined him throughout his life.
After his honorable discharge in 1966, Billy and his family moved to Southern California where he applied the skills he gained in the USMC to achieve certification in Aviation Air Frame and Powerplant Maintenance. He went on to build a distinguished 45-year career as an aircraft technician, spending the majority of those years with the United Parcel Service (UPS).
Billy was known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to everyone he met. He was a dedicated dog owner who found joy training and caring for his pets. He enjoyed honing his skills in Karate, cheering on UCLA sports, and reading his daily newspaper. At family gatherings, he could always be found enjoying a “sugar-free” dessert with a smile.
Above all, Billy was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa, and his four children: Mary Jean Higgins (spouse: Mark), Jimmie Catano (spouse: Arianne), Cody Catano (spouse: Kiana), and Koby Catano. He was a proud grandfather to Jake Higgins, Orion Higgins, Mason Higgins, Sebastian Catano, Kassandra Catano, Savannah Catano, Kingston Catano, and Kaya Catano, and a great‑grandfather to four great‑grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his sister Isabel, and brothers Manuel, Arturo, and Jesus. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Escobar Catano, and his brother Juan.
May his memory bring peace to those who mourn him and inspiration to all who carry forward the values he lived by. His legacy endures in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched.
