Charlotte was born on July 6, 1939 in Topeka, Kansas to Fredrick Carroll and Luella Nelson. She was predeceased by her three siblings: Mary Lou Butt, Fredrick Carroll Jr., and her twin sister, Charlene Tilton Davies; her husband, George Butt; her son, Gerry York; and her daughter, Beverly Butt.
Charlotte is survived by her loving daughters, Belinda Butt and Brenda Butt-Denholtz; Brenda’s husband, Michael Denholtz; her daughter-in-law, Michelle York; her grandchildren: Milenda Andrews and her husband, Curtis Andrews; Mikenzie Denholtz and her husband, Alex Gardels; Maxene Denholtz, Myles Denholtz, and Charlotte York; and her great-grandchildren, Racer and Rocket Andrews.
Charlotte was a devoted military wife and mother, traveling with her family from Kansas to Washington, Alabama and Maine before settling down in California in 1972.
Charlotte was a quintessential matriarch and found joy in opening her home, hosting family and friends for all occasions. She was a feisty competitor and loved playing card games, listening to her favorite musicians (Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, and Roy Orbison), traveling with family, indulging in the occasional slot machine, and was a passionate fan of all things Disney. Her creative spirit shone through her impressionist landscape paintings, hand-sewn dresses, crocheted blankets, and delicious home-cooked meals, bringing loved ones together around her table. As an avid reader herself, Charlotte took immense pride in reading to her grandchildren and instilling in them a love for books and learning.
A proud resident of Riverside for over six decades, Charlotte dedicated herself to the community. She worked at the Riverside County Bar Association for over 30 years, starting as a volunteer and rising to the position of Executive Director through her determination and work ethic. She was an active council member for the International Order of Job’s Daughters while her daughters and granddaughters were in the organization. She also volunteered for several years with Meals on Wheels, delivering hundreds of meals to those in need. When Charlotte was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and again in 2022, she not only survived both times, she supported her fellow fighters by sewing hundreds of breast cancer pillows with her granddaughter, Maxene, and donated them to local Riverside hospitals.
Charlotte Ann Butt will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, where her family and friends will gather to honor her extraordinary journey and the indelible mark she left on their lives.
