David’s passion and career were always rooted in the automotive industry. He built cars, raced Volkswagen Bugs, and could fix anything—mechanical or electrical—for his family and friends. He loved hot rod culture, problem-solving, and figuring things out just for the challenge of it. Beginning work at his father’s gas station, he later became a master technician at Ed Martin’s Garage. Over the years, he shared his knowledge generously, teaching automotive classes at Crafton Hills College and San Bernardino Valley College, and later leading the Toyota T-TEN program at Riverside Community College. He mentored countless students in his trade for more than 30 years.
Beyond his skill and dedication to his work, David was known for his kindness, patience, and quick wit. He had an endless collection of one-liners that will be quoted by those who loved him for years to come. He made people laugh, offered comfort in difficult times, and had a gift for making everyone feel seen and valued. Firm but understanding, he guided his daughters, Sarah and Nichole, and supported his wife, Christina, through life’s challenges. He mentored his sons-in-law with the same care and generosity he gave to his students.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Ed Slocum, and his brother, Alan. He is survived by his wife, Christina; daughters, Sarah (Matt) and Nichole (Matt); five beloved grandchildren—Clementine, Pearl, Ruby, Theelah, and Madeline; brothers, Mark (Dianne) and Richard (Dena); and sister, Annie (Rick). He is also survived by sisters-in-law Ginna, Elaine, Lisa (Wayde), and Marcie (Jeanne), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed every day by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary.
